"Without effort, without talent, without virtue, without
exercise of the faculties, anyone and everyone is accorded the equal right to
the enjoyment of their fruits."
As a result,
"Their energy has been sapped, and
they do not expect their life's activity to produce anything but a living."
-Allan Bloom, The Closing of the American
Mind
There is so much to learn from this brief quote.
We all
enjoy the benefit of our rights, almost regardless of what we do or don't do
(within reason).
But this is the state of childhood.
We, like children, only
enjoy such benefits because of the effort, talent, virtue and hard work of
others--those who made our nation free and who keep it free today.
In the long term, our freedoms will only last to the extent
that we exert our own efforts, talents, virtue and hard work to better society.
As adults, each generation must earn its benefits.
If we focus just on making a
living, our freedoms and opportunities will decrease.
