"All significant political disputes have been about the
meaning of freedom and equality, not about their rightness."
-Allan Bloom, The Closing of the American Mind
People of all major American political views believe in
freedom, and they also believe in equality.
The Declaration of Independence is
all about these two ideas.
But the Right, Left, Center and various extremes
have argued about what, exactly, is the ideal of freedom and equality.
The
argument goes on still today.
It is vital for both Left and Right to realize and accept
that the "other" side really, deeply, genuinely cares about freedom.
It truly
values the idea that "all men are created equal."
So many political
disagreements would disappear if both sides trusted that the other party wants
real freedom.
The disputes that would remain in such a world would be the
really important ones, and with such a change we could all give a lot more time
to these few major differences.
