Civilization and Character

"The process of civilization consists of the discovery by men of the laws of the universe, and of living in harmony with those laws."

-Calvin Coolidge

Societies only achieve civilization to the extent that they apply the natural laws of the universe.

Coolidge also shared the following vital law of the universe is this:

"There is no surer road to destruction than prosperity without character."

Unfortunately, as Rod Dreher put it in his excellent book, Crunchy Cons:
"Both mainstream liberalism and conservatism are essentially materialist ideologies, and we should not be surprised that both shape a society dedicated to the multiplication of wants and the intensification of desire, not the improvement of character."

It is our character as individuals, families, communities and as a society that determines our long-term success.
