"The great obstacle is simply this: the conviction that we
cannot change because we are dependent on what is wrong."
-Wendell Berry
Americans know that the modern form of government--spend,
spend, spend--is broken.
But we don't know exactly what to do about it.
We want
reform, but we want the spending to continue in our favorite programs. We have
become addicts of government programs, and even most of those who most vocally
support government cuts exempt their pet projects.
Eventually, hard decisions have to be made to turn from a
government bias toward spending to a societal preference for free and frugal
government.
But such decisions are only part of the process. The real challenge
is to become a nation of initiators who routinely find effective private
solutions for our societal problems--without government.
Social
entrepreneurship,[i] or its lack,
will ultimately determine whether or not we overcome our modern addiction to
government.
