Freedom's Resilience
Government which maintains freedom is rare in history.
Those
with power usually abuse it -- and government is no exception.
Except for having
weak government, which leaves everyone vulnerable to the attacks of all violent
and forceful men and groups, government has been the greatest danger to freedom
in the history of the world. But the love of freedom is resilient and seems to
beat strongly in most human hearts--especially when it is lost.
G.K. Chesteron said:
"Remember, however, that to be
breakable is not the same thing as to be perishable. Strike a glass, and it
will not endure an instant; simply do not strike it, and it will endure a
thousand years."
Freedom will always win out in the end, because the yearning
for it will never leave. Freedom can be lost in a generation, but the love of
freedom, never.
All those who fight against freedom may win a battle or two, but
they will not win in the end.
Still, each generation must give great attention to the
reality that freedom is fragile and can be lost.
It is up to us to make sure
this does not happen in our generation.
