In the ancient world wealth
usually meant having all of one's needs--food, shelter, clothing--for self and
family.[i]
-Socrates
Being rich meant
having more than one's personal and family needs.[ii]
-Plato, Aristotle
Happiness
consisted in having wealth for oneself and enough riches to help others fulfill
their needs.[iii]
-Solon, Aristotle, Aquinas
We have gained a lot of depth in science, technology and
many other fields since the times of Aristotle and Herodotus, but we may have
lost a great deal of wisdom.
A boost of giving would increase our personal and
national happiness.
