In the U.S. Constitution, the people gave the government exactly 20 powers and reserved all other powers to the states and the people. 

That was one type of government.

Today we have a different type altogether. Add up all the powers of government in Washington and compare them to the original 20 constitutional powers--this will tell you how many freedoms we have lost and what type of government we now have. 

Note that a few of these powers, such as making racial and gender discrimination illegal, were a good change. Note also that there are hundreds of powers, indeed literally thousands, that are a drastic move in the wrong direction.
