Lessons from Aristocracy

For a long period of history, aristocracy represented a real chance for an alternative to monarchy.

During this era, several principles grew: honor, public virtue, noblesse oblige, sacrifice for the nation, the need to prepare oneself for leadership, the role of citizen-leaders, the education of citizen-readers.

I am not a fan of the aristocratic model, but these lessons apply to our nation as well. If we lose these principles, we lose much of what makes a democratic republic work.
