There are certain things which are accomplished by direct
effort, such as a hammer pounding a nail into a board.
Other things are
accomplished by indirect effort, what Buckminster Fuller called "precession,"
which consists of doing something indirectly related but with huge impact on
the goal.
Fuller said this is a "90-degree" action, not direct but still
powerful, like the effort of pushing a screw at a 90-degree angle from the
board--the result is that the screw goes down into the board and is stronger
than the direct-effort nail.
It may appear that raising a successful family has little to
do with spreading freedom in the world, but in fact almost nothing has as much
long-term impact on the freedom and prosperity of society.
As Aristotle taught:
The home is the microcosm of the nation.
