Phyllis Diller once said,
"I was in a beauty contest once. I
not only came in last, I was hit in the mouth by Miss Congeniality."
Funny. But not so humorous in a
high school-oriented culture
which expects policy and politicians to win beauty contests or fail to gain
popular support.
A nation of deep-reading and deep-thinking citizens sees
beyond the shallow. Fortunately, the American people have seldom succumbed to
shallow thinking when it comes to electing leaders.
What is now needed is for the American citizens to be
equally diligent and wise in overseeing daily governance and political
projects.
It may seem that this is too much to ask of the regular people, but
throughout history freedom has always been lost by all people who weren't
actively involved day after day.
This is the real cost of freedom: maintain it
day by day, or lose it and win it back with blood. History is clear on this point.
