A great, free society is the natural result of a citizenry
which dares big things and has the initiative, courage and tenacity to improve
their world.
When the citizens become less original and persistent, freedom
naturally declines.
How do we become such citizens? The answer, as Harold
Whitman put it, is to take action:
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs,
ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
There are far too many Americans today who don't feel
alive--at work or in their personal lives.
Life is essential to freedom. As
Joseph Campbell said, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are."
Are there parts of you--passions or dreams or forgotten
goals--that have been lost? If so, the world needs you to rekindle them.
Such a
change is the greatest--perhaps the only--catalyst of increased freedom and a
better world ahead.
