The Leitmotif of Our Age

"No wonder institutional failure has been the leitmotif of our age."

~David Brooks, The New York Times, July 12, 2012

What an amazing statement.

A leitmotif is a recurrent theme, and it was made most famous by Wagnerian opera where a certain melody tends to show up with a specific character or phrase.

Sadly, institutional failure has been the recurring theme of our age.

What if both big political parties will continue to fail because we are a society far too dependent on big institutions, especially those run by government--but also extending far beyond government?

Will our dependence on big institutions, and the inherent weaknesses and inevitable failures of human institutions, be our downfall?

Is it already?
