Conservative economist Joseph Schumpeter taught in his 1942
book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy
"that socialism" as Francis Fukuyama put it, "would emerge victorious because
capitalist society was culturally self-undermining."
Conservative commentator
Michael Medved called it a myth that there is a divide and battle between big
and small business, but in fact this is exactly what Schumpeter was saying.
When big business gets government to support its needs, the
loser is usually small business.
When, on the other hand, the government
decides to make things more difficult for big business, small business is
nearly always hurt.
In short, government policies from both the Left and Right
are often hurtful to main street--regardless of how they affect Wall Street.
The result is that many conservative policies and most
liberal policies hurt entrepreneurialism and small business, and this tends to
move society inevitably toward more socialist policies.
This has been the
history of the United States for decades.
Today we need a pro-small business agenda from major
candidates and even more from ordinary citizens in our society.
This may, in
fact, be our most important current need.
As goes small business, so goes the
middle class and so goes America's freedom.
